The Secret To Effective Communication

BusinessmeetingCommunication…we all do it. Some of us do it better than others. Most think good communicators are the best talkers or presenters. The reality is that the best communicators are the best listeners. Those who ask great questions get the most out of the person they are communicating with.

As we consider the power of Ultimate Client Relationship and how we care for and serve our clients, it is important to focus on improving our communication skills. This past weekend, I came across an article that touches on all the right points.

The article states that the content of what people say has three layers:

  1. Feelings
  2. Wants
  3. Needs

It goes on to share tips for great communication:

  1. Listen before getting your point across
  2.  Ask questions instead of assuming
  3. Ask questions instead of assuming
  4. Don’t be the one to do all the talking
  5. Appreciate differences and learn from others who may not agree with you
  6. Listen for what people want and help them by making it easier for them in some way
  7. Stop trying to fix situations and learn to listen so that people tell you how they need to be supported
  8. Don’t assume you know what people are thinking and instead ask them
  9.  Focus on what people say with eye contact and eliminate distractions like technology when you are talking
  10.  Tell others what you are thinking as well as what you want and need so they can help you
